Can you supply a serial number? The patent for the Webley Mark IV, cal. .455 pistol was 'sealed' in 1899. Evidently production of this model was aimed at supplying Brit soldiers in the Boer War. It was still standard issue when WWI broke out and many were distributed to troops. Given the dating and the history of use, it is safe with smokeless loads of the Webley variety, assuming that it is in otherwise good condition; this is NOT a high pressure gun. Nice mild loadings in the 580-630 fps range will be kind to that old piece. The Mark II cartridge loaded a 265 grain bullet over 7.5 grains of Cordite (smokeless powder), though over the years the charges were reduced to 6.25 grains (1900) and then to 5.5 grains in 1914. The cartridge in 1921 was spec'd for 580 fps. at 30 feet from the muzzle. The Mark III cartridge was certified the year before the pistol was. It loaded a 218.5 grain 'manstopper' HP/HB bullet over seven grains of Cordite. It became obsolete in short order. The Mark IV cartridge fired a 220 grain bullet over seven grains of Cordite. Velocity was 630 fps. Pete |
